Oooh a Malia

Last month I visited the beautiful Greek island Crete. I stayed in the small town of Stalis which although small had plenty of restaurants and bars to explore. Stalis is close to the well known town of Malia, typically full of British teenagers on their first holiday away from their parents. Malia has built up a reputation of being a "trashy" and "tacky" resort my experience was rather different. "The strip" was not intimidating and full of restaurants and bars to relax in. The clubs did not open until 2am so if you want some of at atmosphere but want to avoid the party scene I would recommend going out earlier. With two cocktails for 7euros it is very cheap! Just before the strip we discovered Drossia..this is the best restaurant in the area, we liked it so much we ate there two nights! All the food was local and freshly prepared it was by far one of the best restaurants I have been to. We also found a beautiful local bakery at the end of the strip which has so many delicious looking cakes and baklava (traditional Greek desert) they were a little pricer than the supermarkets but well worth it.

As well as wandering the strip in Malia we did venture to the picturesque island of Santorini. Whilst it is picture perfect and of course I had to get that money shot! It was full of tourists and with very narrow streets it didn't make for a great atmosphere. I had been desperate to visit Santorini after seeing so many picture online and boy it was just breathtaking in Oia, but beyond the white buildings there wasn't much more to offer. As Oia is very high up sadly there is no beach amongst the many hotels, so if you are to stay in Oia make sure your hotel has a really nice pool!

After leaving Oia we headed to Kalmari, which is on the other side of the island. The beach was stony so make sure you have some flip flops ready! This was a much quieter part of the island (apart from the occasional plane flying over) so you could relax and enjoy the sunshine.

Overall I did enjoy my time in Crete and Santorini, I would recommend visiting but I wouldn't stay in the moonlight palace hotel again. All the staff were so friendly and it was a traditional Greek experience, the actual hotel was very dated and in desperate need of a refurb! Also if you choose a day trip to Santorini be prepared for a lot of windy roads! But do try the traditional Santorini wine, it is expensive but well worth paying the extra euros for!
