Big wide world

Being at University is like living in a bubble the big wide world is a scary concept, but whilst in your bubble it seems so far away. Three years at University went so quickly and before I knew it I was sitting my last exam. Whilst that last week was glorious and I loved every minute of freedom the big wide world was fast approaching.

I have now been finished University since may and have endured months of scouting for that perfect first job or internship. After receiving several rejection emails (which can be very de motivating) I thought I would share a few tips on how to survive post University life.

1. Google will become your new best friend.
Love it or hate it google is the best way to find out about recruitment websites and also about graduate websites. I have found gradtouch and UK fashion intern to be very useful and they both offer job alerts which will save a lot of time and effort. Now get applying and keep those fingers crossed.

2. Stay positive
After a few months of online searches and no replies or just rejections it can be so easy to give up. Don't! It took a few months for me to get replies and secure interviews and even if you are not offered the job interviews are always good practice.

3. Do your research
If there is a certain company you want to work for before you start that application make sure you read up about the history of the company. Before interviews it is also good to read up on the ethics and culture of the company to see how you would fit in.

4. Look out for graduate events
I have found several graduate job fairs are out there. These are perfect to meet potential recruiters and to mingle and network. Of course when attending these events have a stack of business cards at the ready to hand out.

5. Try an Internship
Although you may hate the thought of working for free internships can be valuable to graduates and students who want some professional experience (also there are paid ones out there). Internships often offer you a few weeks or months working with a company which will provide you will valuable experience and knowledge of working in industry. Also if you are unsure of what you want to do they are a brilliant way of testing the waters and getting a feel for the industry.

It is always important to remember never to give up hope and keep persevering until you find that perfect first job.
